From this …
to officially homeless as of last Monday. All my worldly possession now fit into a storage unit and two duffel bags.
Clearly if you’re reading this than you’re an important person in my life or have expressed an interest in living vicariously through me. Theoretically, I’ll try and post weekly, if not more, when I have something interesting to share. I’m also going to be posting to Instagram under the username @jessunthethered. The millennials in my life convinced me that given potentially spotty Wi-Fi access that Instagram makes more sense. Plus given my writing abilities and the tendency for my brain to way over process (some even call it dial-up processing), I’m probably better off focusing on photos than words for all of our sakes!
When I dreamed up this little adventure, the rough plan was approximately three months in East Africa, three in Indonesia, and then ending up in New Zealand, mixing in bucket list items, travel, and volunteering. Depending on how I felt living out of a duffel bag, how much money I had left, and the state of our country, I’d then make a decision about when to return. But of course, the plan has already changed before I have even left the country. I’ll be in Africa until November. Too much to see and too much good work to be done to not do it well.
I leave for Tanzania bright and early on Tuesday morning out of BWI via Philly and Doha. I’ll have a few days to get settled in before tackling my first bucket list item on June 26. First up will be hiking Mount Kilimanjaro. If all goes well, I’ll summit at sunrise on July 2. If you want to follow me on this little hike the tour operator, Kandoo Adventures will be posting updates to their Facebook page and Instagram account @kandooadventures.
Once I get settled in Moshi, I’ll put up another post detailing more of the volunteer work I’ll be doing in Africa.
Let the adventure and vicarious living begin.
